Industry Insight: IFS Skillnet Learning and Development Report 2025

Discover the latest insights into how professionals in Ireland's International Financial Services (IFS) sector are approaching learning and development (L&D). This report, commissioned by IFS Skillnet and conducted by Amárach Research and IOB, reveals a landscape fundamentally reshaped by the pandemic and new work patterns.

Based on comprehensive research, including a quantitative survey of 373 employees and 30 in-depth qualitative interviews, the findings provide a clear picture of modern L&D preferences.

Key Findings at a Glance:

Online is the New Default: The shift to hybrid and remote work is permanent. As a result, online learning is now the dominant preference, with 83% of professionals citing its convenience and accessibility. In contrast, only 5% state a preference for in-person training.

Time is the Biggest Barrier: The main obstacle to engaging in L&D is not lack of desire, but lack of time. 70% of respondents identified "time outside of work / other commitments" as the primary barrier, followed by cost (54%) and time away from work responsibilities (49%).

Virtual, Not Just On-Demand: While e-learning is popular, the most preferred format across all topics—from technical skills to leadership—is live, instructor-led virtual training. Professionals value real-time interaction combined with remote flexibility.

The Mandatory vs. Non-Mandatory Gap: The research highlights a key difference in approach. Mandatory/compliance training (e.g., AML, Data Protection) is closely monitored. However, non-mandatory L&D (such as leadership and professional skills), which employees are keen to develop, is often left entirely to individual initiative.

No Appetite for After-Hours: The study found a "very limited appetite" for attending external, in-person courses during evenings or outside of standard work hours, reinforcing the need for flexible, accessible learning solutions.

This report provides crucial data for employers seeking to upskill their teams, for L&D providers tailoring new programmes, and for individuals planning their own career development.
